Beauty and Noise

The smell of plastic wrap
And CD cases
Old linoleum floors
Under squeaky converse laces
Holding the song in my hands
Excited to listen whenever
Excited to discover more
No more elusive mysteries slipping in and out of coffee shop doors
What other emotions and atmospheric worlds are in store?
Curious to finally see the lyrics
Curious to see the pictures inside
Wondering who they are, how they look like
The faces that hide behind the voices that bring me to life

They pile in the corner of my room
4 sided symbols of the past and all that’s in between
Collecting who I am and where I’ve been
Collecting the heartaches and friendships
The phases, fads and memories
Songs holding our names, our identities
Classifying you and me
Bringing us together
Bringing us apart
An art that’s more than beauty and noise
An art that gave us freedom of choice

It was a culture, a definition, a destination
It was dance, it was image
It was clothes, it was language

It was an extension of what lay underneath
It was an extension of you and me

Best Friend

 She’s thirteen
And laughing so hard
The changes she found
Forever inside her
Waking up early
Conversations fluttering
She can say anything
She’s found her friend
Together, inseparable
Faces hurting
Smiling at everything
It’s all related
Filtered through
A ridiculous lense
Pigeons walking intensely
Building suspense
With the soundtrack in their heads.
Someone gets her
Understands her
Inspires her
The relishing, the sharing
The capacity
To be there happily
Enthusiasm for life
Indulged again and again.

Who

Cleaning out your closet
Layers of layers
Each piece holds a history
An identity you hope to keep
Savoring who you used to be
All the places you’ve been
Your friendships and memories
Hidden in your sleeves
If only these clothes could speak
They’ve seen it all
The lives before you
The lives you’ve had
The people you’ve been
A transformed piece of hand-me-down
A part of you
Trying to show
Through the cracks
Truth barely perceptible
Through the cotton
Brands and tags
Your personality’s fingerprint
Weaving up and around
Making its way
Parading through
A visual language
Society imprinted on you
A walking sign post
Answering lightly
The question of “who?”
Categorizing
Identifying
An image, a persona
What you see is only
What you hope to show
Anyone can be anybody
Putting them on
Taking them off
Each day a choice
Each day
An attempt to answer
Who am I today?
